GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR
It’s a pleasure to be able to send you another short Newsletter to keep you in touch with local events.
I write this in mid August following an extraordinary spell of hot weather culminating in yesterday’s all time record of 101degF, which just happened to coincide with my mother’s 90th Birthday Party. Somehow or other we all managed to keep going through the heat of the afternoon, which was good going considering the advanced years of many of those present. Heat is often the undoing of older cars too, so it was fun to see a couple of Big Healeys cruising the M25 on the previous day when it was a mere 98degF. Hope they made it too!
The appeal for volunteers to join our committee produced the hoped-for response, and I’m delighted to tell you that George Grammer is coming aboard with a view to taking over the Secretarial and Newsletter roles. Splendid news!
Our Sunday lunchtime meeting at the Shire Horse near Maidenhead in July was a great success, with a dozen cars and even more owners turning up to swap stories and experiences. Several fine Sprites and Big Healeys caught the attention of passing motorists on the A4, but the star-turn in my eyes was a 100 BN1 which made the trip from Surrey. This car was the antithesis of a show car, but it’s true beauty lay in its originality, even down to the Dunlop Roadspeed tyres which it had worn since the mid 1950s. Such time-warp cars are really, really rare these days. Great!
Healey Weekend at Prescott was another great event, even if the heavy rain on Saturday evening did rather dampen BBQ spirits. But Sunday was fine in every respect. Well done South West Centre.
CLASSIC CAR EVENING AT THE ACE CAFÉ, LONDON, Tuesday 9th September
 |
It’s curious that we chose to designate this particular meeting as
'Healey Nite', because it turns out it’s also the night when Classic Cars magazine (who promote the monthly meeting at the Ace Café) celebrates it’s 30th anniversary.
It’s going to be a mammoth turn-out! So, everyone who lives in London or within striking distance, polish up that bodywork, fire up the engine and cruise down to the Ace Café for a celebration of all things classic. |

TREASURE HUNT, Sunday 14th September

The Jekyll & Hyde
Stratfield Turgis (A33)
MR 175/697595 |
Once again it’s time for the Annual Thames Valley Treasure Hunt! Sincere thanks are due to Norman and Chris Truscott who have donned the organiser’s caps for another year and promised us a pleasant afternoon driving through the Berkshire/Hampshire countryside. We very rarely lose anybody so we’ll accept no excuses for anything less than a 100% turnout. The weather will be fine, and the whole experience will be fun! The starting point is the Jekyll and Hyde pub/restaurant on the A33 at Stratfield Turgis between Reading and Basingstoke. This venue provides very convenient access from the M4 to the north and the M3 to the south. If you fancy a spot of lunch or a natter beforehand, then gather around 12.30 pm, otherwise the event itself will get underway around 2 pm. The route of approximately 30 miles will take in the Roman walls of Silchester. No maps are required, just a pen or pencil to complete the question sheet. There will be PRIZES. Please come and join us. |
